At Lone Saddle Cattle Co., we specialize in raising grass-fed beef. Our cattle roam freely on pasture and are never given hormones or antibiotics. We believe in providing our customers with high-quality, sustainable beef products.

Our family recently had the opportunity to represent local ranchers along with members of the Cattlemen’s Association and local FFA chapters to support Second Harvest and the State Beef Commission to provide meals to families this holiday season.
When I was a kid, there were times when my family benefited from the kindness of others. Likely, those people never knew the impact some of those actions meant for us. And though it took me a little too long to recognize it, I likely would not be the same person without some of those influences. As an adult with children of my own it’s important to me that they learn; be kind, be helpful. I guess it’s my way of saying thank you to some of those people that helped us along the way.

When I was in the 3rd grade my parents, younger sister, and myself all shared a bedroom in my Uncle’s house. There was only enough room for a twin bed and a full sized air mattress with our boxes of clothing shoved in a corner. We didn’t have much, and there was nothing to do. I got a library card and began to borrow my limit in books every week as a way to escape the reality of our situation. I read Lonesome Dove for the first time as a 9 year old. (Probably too young to be reading that book, but it became my favorite and I’ve read it about every decade since) I craved any kind of space and I remember wishing that I had an adventure to pursue to take me away from there. The cowboy lifestyle took root in my mind and I spent a lot of hours as a child daydreaming about a life I would never know.
Except, once I get an idea in my head, I just can’t quit it.
I’m an unlikely cowboy. You could say Lonesome Dove literally changed my life.

All that to say, if you aren’t actively pouring everything you’ve got into pursuing your dream, it’ll always be a dream.

When I was in the 3rd grade my parents, younger sister, and myself all shared a bedroom in my Uncle’s house. There was only enough room for a twin bed and a full sized air mattress with our boxes of clothing shoved in a corner. We didn’t have much, and there was nothing to do. I got a library card and began to borrow my limit in books every week as a way to escape the reality of our situation. I read Lonesome Dove for the first time as a 9 year old. (Probably too young to be reading that book, but it became my favorite and I’ve read it about every decade since) I craved any kind of space and I remember wishing that I had an adventure to pursue to take me away from there. The cowboy lifestyle took root in my mind and I spent a lot of hours as a child daydreaming about a life I would never know.
Except, once I get an idea in my head, I just can’t quit it.

I’ve been lucky to experience some of the places I’ve been. Some seem to remain the same. Others have been changed by time and circumstance, only recognized in memories. Some destinations were just happenstance, a result of letting my feet wander at the same time as my mind. Sometimes I tend to let them go pretty far.

2. A leaf rustling in the wind. Could have been a snake.
3. A yellow flower. Could have been a tasty treat.
4. A group of does. Could have been her best friends.

I recently read something that resonated with me. It went along the lines of:
Build your children up as often as possible so that when they’re grown it will be your voice that they hear inside.
I thought that was interesting. It’s our job to make sure our children feel seen and heard. Respected and loved. Be there for them now so that one day they know that they can come to you with anything.
Most of these posts come from excerpts of my personal journal. They are observations, encouragements, and aspirations for the man and father I want to be. And I fall short often, so I need the reminders. I hope that someday these two little girls consider me a great father, and I know great parenting takes effort. I just want them to look back on their childhood and know, Mama and Daddy were there, loving the heck out of them.

Got a call last night that our cow/calf herd was gone from our high pasture. A herd of elk knocked down a section of fence and ours decided to take that opportunity to go for a walk in the mountains. We lost 2 calves earlier this year in the same area to wolves, we needed to find our herd.
I called home, “Babe, I’ll be home in an hour, I could use another rider if she’s up for it.”
“Her pony is already saddled and she’s ready to go.”
She spent 5 hours in the saddle riding through sage brush and hawthorns in 95° heat at my side; rounding up cattle and checking fence line. Calling her a tough kid almost isn’t fair, because she smiled and chatted the whole time while I know grown men who would spend the same day complaining.
It was a full day’s work, but to her it was just another ride with dad. Yeah, that girl is a cowboy.

There likely ain’t an Econ 101 professor in the world that’ll teach you how to turn a surplus of feathered free rangers into truck stop champagne; so there you have it. First lesson is free.

The conventional path was never a real match for me. I’m not always the greatest follower of rules. I enjoy situations where the stakes are high and the consequence of failure is real. I agree to things that I’m not very good at because the pressure forces me to adapt. I lack organizational skills. I never stick to the plan. These aren’t habits that are encouraged in today’s educational system, but they work well enough for someone who tries his very best to spend as little time as possible anywhere that might have walls.

We’ve had mentors along the way, people willing to show us the ropes as long as we were willing to learn and put in some sweat equity. Friends who are ready to lend a hand when things get western. Those who support our dream by doing business with us locally and giving us the opportunity to keep ranching. Those that have entrusted us with providing beef for your families. To those who celebrate with us, those who support us, and those that continue to saddle up with us even on the days that it would be easier not to…thank you. I’m incredibly grateful for you. It makes the hard days worth it, and the good days that much sweeter.
